Remember how you responded last time when someone thanked you? most probably you said “Welcome”. this is the most common, impactless, and useless response in this context.

this doesn’t give any kind of feeling to anybody. this doesn't make you different and outstanding from the rest of the world which we all want to be.

“successful brands make themselves distinct from the crowd”

Do you know why we do this, we humans tend to follow the pattern (which leads us towards herd mentality). Because of this tendency, we always think according to pre-built patterns of rules. This is the reason why most people fail to innovate and do something creative.

“Creativity is all about breaking patterns”

“To make followers, stop following patterns, create your own. Because people don’t follow people who are same as them.”

Why not say Welcome in reply to thanks

let us see 2 situations

1st- You answered welcome, what happened next? Nothing, he went on his way. Who cares about the word “welcome”? This is normal, he has been hearing this for years. And remember what happens if we listen to a song over and over again.

2nd- You reply, “It’s my pleasure”, what happens next? The next person will look into your eyes for a second. His brain will take a second to think of your answer. He will feel that you are very happy to help him. He will remember your answer for longer than the normal period.

he will have a different perception about you than others. and you know

“brand is the first thought which comes to mind when somebody takes your name”

I hope you understand why “welcome” is not good for our personality. let’s discuss the best alternatives according to different contexts.

Best ways to respond to thanks

  1. it’s my pleasure -recommend and all-rounded
  2. it’s my job
  3. it’s/that’s all right
  4. no need for that
  5. not at all
  6. Don’t mention it

1. it’s my Pleasure

Best of all contexts and my favorite. usable in the office, party, with friends, in public, and everywhere else. recommended

2. it’s my job

best for use in formal places where you get thanks for work as a duty. eg. when one of your clients thank you for completing his project work on time.

3.it’s/that’s all right

This is a special one. When you get a thank you in return for helping with something you don’t do regularly. For example, when someone’s purse falls in front of you and after returning it, he says thank you from the bottom of his heart.
It is recommended only in this type of situation.

4. no need for that

I know it’s not popular, but it’s usually used when you help someone you’re not happy with at the time. It is not recommended because of its slight rudeness, but as a practical human being, it is not always possible to be in a good mood. For example, helping a friend with whom you fought last night.

5. not at all

when somebody gives you too many thanks and repeats his thankfulness again and again. when he says you helped me so much, quickly says that “not at all” or “no need of that” to make him feel a little more comfortable.

these replies are my favorite and I think these can cover almost all situations. I hope you liked it.

I will be publishing another article tomorrow on how to reply to “How are you”. this will also help you attract more attention by changing only a few words. so please follow Twitter, and Linkedin, or follow on medium and join the mailing list to get notified.
